get ready for an explosion of art! we’ll start off slow with a Polaroid-like shot of remy, ivy, and finn.

i know in this particular strip, it’s the woman who has the baggage, but i definitely mean that both men and women carry their fair share of baggage. so, what is baggage, in regards to the dating environment? i think baggage is any unresolved emotional impact that withholds someone from truly experiencing a relationship like they really want to. now, perhaps remy is not behaving ideally by running away, but it is something to keep an eye out for, especially early in the relationship. instead, perhaps remy should confront the baggage, get it to open up, and who knows, maybe everyone will come out stronger from it.
just finished Nevin Martell’s fantastic book, Looking for Calvin and Hobbes. it’s basically a biography on Bill Watterson and his ‘revolutionary comic strip.’ in the course of reading the book, i got so many insights and inspiration that i’ll be undergoing a revamp of finn comics. something i should not be afraid of doing is shaking up the comic strip in hopes of making it better. so, hopefully over the next couple months, we’ll see some significant changes to finn and his world. stay tuned!

i’m gonna sound nerdy here, but when you’re meeting someone for the first time, especially a potential mate, it’s like all sensors are on full alert and taking reading. you’re analyzing every body movement, every they’re saying, what they’re wearing, etc. it’s important that you take all the readings possible because it’ll dictate what you do next. you get good readings from her, you’ll probably proceed to throw her some game! and i think it’s especially important to be unbiased during this first reading. you can pick up on some critical behaviors if you’re not too blinded by physical attraction!
keeping up with some new backgrounds, we get some tropical paradise island scenery this time. and i had a real tough time portraying the computer sensor readings to make it look cool but also get the information across clearly. i think the only part i succeeded in was covering up remy’s face though!

some guys have no fear when it comes to approaching a girl. i’m not talking about those guys here! i’m talking about guys who have to dig deep to muster up the courage to approach a girl and risk the probability of rejection. and i think that one word says it all – rejection. it’s a powerful word with powerful emotions behind it. so, for someone to take the chance of an approach, i applaud the effort. of course, there’s always the flip side of the person who gets hit on. the constant annoyance of being interupted and probably being interupted with horrible game! not sure with side is better to be on.
pretty happy with the way this week’s strip turned out. the background work of the earth-like planet and the glow into the black of space turned out alright. and the red hot entry of the astronuat worked out alright too. only downside was that it was dependant on photoshop magic. i do prefer to do as much of the art storytelling via pencil as possible. i also used a new tool, Copic markers. i met Alvin Lee at a con last year and saw him doing amazing art with them. apparently, i have a ways to go!

so this week we dive a little deeper into what it means to be the social coordinator. last week we saw some the negatives, such as always coordinating and worrying about the people. and this week we see some of the positives, which is namely you (as the coordinator) usually get to pick when and where! thus guaranteeing it will fit in your schedule and you’ll like the venue! hmm, but now that i think about, i think i found another negative – the lack of commitment from people. what if you take the time to setup a pretty good event but nobody commits? i think that’s another strip for another day…
artwork wise, we do some more panel within panels. i think it livens up the strip and keeps the action going. feel free to comment on what you think!

ever feel like when you go out with a group of friends, you spend half your time just making sure everyone is there? with the advent of cell phones and texting, it’s like half the population is on their phones sometimes, keeping track of one another. and all this is supposed to make it easier to stay in touch! i guess my point here is coordinating friends and then making sure everyone is ok is actually a lil tougher and more time consuming than expected. but you know what, it’s all worth it when it comes down to getting to hang out with good friends.
ok, this strip prob highlights one of my weaker areas, which are backgrounds. add that to the list of things to improve, more realistic, but also more creative backgrounds.

here we have it, the last and very important step to any date – the closing. not sure many people take advantage of this moment, but it could pay back huge dividends if done right. and it’s a probably very nervous time, but you just gotta step up and do something amzing, that way they’ll have something to remember you by – a lasting impression. the only thing you gotta we careful about is not to be, well, weird. keep it simple, like a nice present or a nice compliment. i’d avoid references to battlestar galatica.
artwork, it’s such a huge help to have life models to go from, from body movements to background at, like the jeep in this week’s strip. i was reading about Marvel’s foray into the motion comic scene (not exactly animated) with thier first comic, spider woman, with art by Alex Maleev. he actually has a huge library of pictures of building and backgrounds that he draws and photshops from. and then he actually hires a model so he can draw poses from her. awesome.

last week’s strip on step one of a date was dinner, which is probably the easiest aspect of a date. the next step gets real tricky, which is an event. it’s important to move your date from location to location to establish memories together, which causes a sense of duration together. but what do you pick for an event? sometimes it’s driven by what your city/town offers but sometimes you can get creative and make something up yourself! maybe make it a world of warcraft night! ok, i’m so kidding with that last statement – do not do that on your date!
pretty happy how that theatre guy turned out with his colonial wig and ruffly shirt. and not so sure about owen behind that fence, but i think it gets the point across. ![]()
