did this awhile back and finally getting around to posting it. this is the first step i do, which is just pencils. the next couple steps, inking, scanning, coloring, touch-ups, and maybe lettering are all challenging in their own ways, but as an artist, this is still my favorite step!
as i was drawing this, i knew i wanted to draw real-life finn sitting in the center, flanked by elle and ivy. i always have a hard time creating backdrops, so i just stole this one from where i was sitting, at a starbucks coffee shop. the lighting apparatus was a google image find and the ottoman was actually from my house. (love ottomans!) now, the painting in the background was something spontaneous. i knew the backdrop needed something, but obviously not to dramatic as to overwhelm the foreground. so, to drive home the point of elle, finn, and ivy, i just drew their comic strip version. i loved the way it turned out, and hope you do too!

i’ve been learning more and more about this phenomena of ‘dating exclusively.’ who knew it could be so intricate with all the fine prints. so, i just resort to my underlying motto of “keep it simple.” the first step is definitely communication. let’s just talk it out and see what the other thinks. no need for all the assumptions and clues and indications; just talk about it! and then comes the hard answer of maybe it’s, “yes, let’s go exclusive” or “no, i don’t think i’m ready for that.” but either way, i bet it’ll be a lot less drama and a lot more productive.
ok, so i was trying to make use of the space again by doing a single panel. i think i was going for owen having a bit of a contemplative moment before rushing to the punchline by ivy.

i’m reminded of an episode of fresh prince of bel air where will smith begins the date with a smoking hot girl. but then they get trapped somewhere, and as the night unravels, so does the girl! what i mean is she has fake nails, fake hair, tons of make-up, etc. i guess my point here is as you get closer and closer to your partner, youstart discovering what they’re really like. so how much can you really know about someone if you’ve just been dating a few weeks? (wait wait, my partner just left the room…fart.)
ok, i admit it, i have no idea what i’m doing with those panels there. i knew i wanted to do something different and that’s what came out. let’s just hope it’s not hurting but rather helping tell the story.

this week’s idea was inspired from a friend of mine, and i think most of us can understand! we all love to hear about each other’s life and what’s been going on and all that…but what happens when the story just drags on and on. well, i think if you’re courteous, then, there’s not much you can do! so, instead we use that time and fantasize about what could be happening. haha!
taking place as part of finn’s futuristic fantasy, we utilize the cool looking floating green display. pretty easy to do but i def like the way it comes out. also, i’m working on differentiating the characters’ physical traits more to make them more recognizable. ivy has that red hair that’s short and squarish, and i’m giving that other character (not named yet!) a more noticable hair.
