it’s a significant step in the relationship when you go on your first overnight trip together.  whether it be in the next town or to another continent, the fact is being with someone continuously is a big deal.  it’s easy to be yourself for 3 hours in front of your significant other on a date but it’s a different situation entirely to be yourself for 24 hours straight.  to see how that person goes to bed and what that person’s nature is when he/she wakes allows you to learn a lot.  i guess what i’m saying is you can’t hide your true nature for that long and that’s why a trip is the perfect situation to discover that.

this week we have a dragon.  was the dragon the best way to metaphorically depict the strip’s punchline?  prob not.  but it’s a dragon!  i have to admit, not entirely happy with the way i colored it and perhaps i needed more background detail.  in any case, it was fun to draw and allow the art to do all of the talking this week.  hope you enjoy!

as we explore the concept of dating multiple people with our playa persona Ace, we come to a decision we need to make pretty quickly…i think.  i think it’s a little ambiguous as to what society believes is an appropriate amount of time before you must tell them you’re dating multiple people.  is it one month or 3 dates or never?  (i would imagine most people would want it to be never!)  but let’s put the spotlight of us for a second.  i mean, how long does it really take to determine initially if you’re compatible with a person?  also, how long does it take to figure out which one you’re more excited about?  all i’m saying is this isn’t something to loiter with.  this is real life emotions and this is how baggage gets created!

i feel like my artwork is steadily increasing but the storylines have been a struggle lately.  someone wrote to me awhile ago expressing, “curious where this strip is heading.”  to be honest, i’m ok with it not going anywhere.  i had envisioned finn to not be like For Better or For Worse by Lynn Johnston, where all her characters grow up, have kids, etc.  i’m ok with it being more like my idol, Calvin & Hobbes where you’re taken away to a place where time stands still and you can soak in the situation.

the concept of dating multiple people at once is so tricky.  i’d like to think i didn’t do that because it would’ve been so much to keep up with!  and in today’s age of social networking, it would be so easy to check a person’s facebook, twitter, or even google to figure out who else that person is talking to.  but i’ll venture to say, the concept of dating multiple people in the very early stages of dating should be embraced.  i mean, it’s so hard to find that one person you’re meant to spend the rest of your life with that dating one at a time (plus the time in between) would take so long and there’s only so many prime years in our life!

when i come up with storylines, the struggle i have is finding an interesting setting to tell it in, that adds character, and would be fun to draw.  so, i figure guys sometimes go out and play sports, and they usually end up catching up on news and such.  so, maybe in the future we’ll see more sport scenes on top of the coffee shop talks.

so, that’s a serious question, what do you see when you’re infatuated with someone because of some cool thing they can do?  it’s like all of a sudden, that person can do no wrong.  everything they say is hilarious or heartfelt.  every movement they make is stylish and respected.  but take away that infatuation, and everything becomes just ordinary.  suddenly everything they say becomes annoying.  and every move they make is clumsy.  i guess the real question, how do we stay infatuated?  cause i think we’d all agree, it’s a lot more exciting loving everything about that person.

big change up this week with the level of detail on his hair.  what do you think?  i think it really adds character to, err, the character.  and the last panel worked out pretty good with some life-like guitar playing.  it’s getting hard to draw anything nowadays unless i have a model to go off of!
