joe madureira came and went. went he came onto the scene back with uncanny x-men, i thought that was some of the best pencils ever. then he went on to do his own thing with Battlechasers, which to this day, i don’t know what it was about and if the series ever finished. BUT, it had fantastic art. and i think i heard he went on to do video games. anyways, here’s hoping to returns to comics one day.

slightly longer than 30 min, we finish off our lesson on Steve McNiven with the debut of the Sentry, from The New Avenger #10. at first, when the Sentry debut, i thought “what a weak character!” but looking back on him, it’s actually impressive how Marvel was able to introduce such a brand new and powerful character, then take him away. as for McNiven, i’m def learning the art of just adding details where it should it go. don’t be afraid.

next up in my study of some of the great artists these days is Steve McNiven. i first took note of him back in The New Avengers #7, which is where the below face examinations are from. from what i can tell, small eyes for eyes, drawing the bridge of the nose and that thing above the lips, and just no fear in drawing line details all adds up to his unique style.

ok, so i’m gonna try out something different for my morning sketches. i’m definitely still learning how to draw and trying to figure out my style. so, how better to learn than to emulate some of my comic book artist idols!
first up, Oliver Coipel! a french artist who i think first started off with the Thor reboot a few years back, he’s also done the major crossover, The Seige. as you can tell from my copy below, still need to work on my proportions cause i’m skewing!

it’s that fantastic time of the month again, known as sketch night! again, hosted at the great Geek Easy of A Comic Shop, i’m joined by Wheezy and Chibar. tonight’s model is a burlesque model and goes by Kza Von Addams.
with each of these sketch nights, i try to practice a particular skill. for this month, i was trying to go a bit more extreme and exaggerated with my art, ala Skottie Young. as you’ll see, i think i failed that goal miserably. that’s ok, as long as i have a drawing utensil in my, it’s all good.
let’s start off with these 30 second sketches. instead of the Copic Sketch marker, i’m using a Copic 0.5 multiliner.
followed quickly with 1 minute sketches. the model was moving quite a bit, but still good.
for the first 5 minute sketch, i got a bit frustrated with my lack of ability to capture the pose and even the emotion quickly enough. i thought a change up of tool would help, and i liked my third attempt with the Copic sketch marker.
for the lone 10 minute sketch, i was all over the place. i thought i’d start off with thick pencils to get the form first, but i quickly grew frustrated with where i was going. got to some inks, but not much.
tonight’s challenge was to incorporate a peacock into the picture! even though i had drawn one before, apparently it’s been too long because when i started drawing it, it looked more like a turkey!
the night concluded with two final 15 minute sketches. i took liberties with this time to just work on some faces. i desperately wanted to capture more of her emotion. i know for every line i drew on her face added like 5 years to her age, but i’m experimenting! as always, though, lots of fun, especially with friends.

remember Omega Red from the X-Men. awesome character. in my sketch, the only thing that makes him Omega Red is apparently the symbol on his headband.
